About Paul Valadez

Paul Valadez is a figurative painter working with mixed media, acrylics, metal and text. His works incorporate comfortable, everyday imagery with a sardonic undercurrent of the human condition woven into its presentation.

As the child of Mexican and Anglo parents, that undercurrent often depicts strained race relations that he experienced growing up in the Central Valley of California and that he now, ironically embodies living on the US/Mexico border. The work, “White Castle”, on display in the Reposado Suite, prominently features iconic, White Castle Burger food chain text juxtaposed with World War II fighter planes utilizing ominous colors to evoke the dissonance between the contradictory images.

Valadez is a graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute with a BFA in Interdisciplinary Art. He earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where he was awarded a Weiss Fellowship. He has shown in the “Texas National” at Stephen F. Austin State University, The “Chicana/o Biennial” at MACLA/Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana in San Jose Ca. In addition, he was invited to show in “Violent Violence”, Arti et Amicitiae, Amsterdam, Netherlands and was selected for the “New American Talent 16”, Texas Fine Arts Association Juried Competition in 2001.

His work is featured in the permanent collections in various museums around the country including the “El Paso museum of art” El Paso TX, “The Nevada Museum of Art” Reno, and “The Ackland Museum” at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill N.C., and Cheech Marin owns three works by Valadez.

Valadez currently reside in Edinburg, Texas where he is a professional artist and full-time lecturer at the University of Texas-Pan American.
